Where food and climate targets meet
TOGETHER, WE ARE ON A MISSION TO IDENTIFY OUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT THROUGHOUT ALL AREAS OF OUR FOOD-TO-GO PRODUCTION. WITH THE HELP OF FOODSTEPS FARM TO FORK INSIGHT.
WHAT IS CARBON LABELLING?
similar to the nutritional labels that you find on food wrappers, our labels provide information on the carbon footprint of a dish:
Carbon intensity is a measurement of the carbon footprint per kilogram of food (kg CO2e / kg of food). Similarly to nutritional value, this measurement allows for a fair comparison between products of different serving sizes
How are the carbon footprint scores calculated?
the carbon footprint of our products is calculated from cradle-to-grave using leading life-cycle assessment (lca) data, so starting from the production emissions of inputs to the farm, and going right through to waste disposal emissions. using this data, carbon footprint values are calculated in three ways:
directly from LCA studies on the specific food item.
indirectly using proxy food items where a direct match cannot be found.
by combining multiple studies and life cycle stages for processed food items containing more than one ingredient.
for items procured from another food producer who has not provided information on their product, the foodsteps score is an estimation based on similar food items and may not be a true reflection of the environmental impact.
These A-E ratings are allocated according to the food carbon budget of 5 gigatonnes of CO2e per year for the global population. This has been set by the EAT-Lancet Commission in line with the planetary boundary for emissions, allowing earth systems to stay in a safe operating space. This is a prerequisite for aligning to the Paris Agreement to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change, by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
